The Magic Warble Review and Giveaway

About the Book:

The Magic Warble
written by Victoria Simcox
cover and interior art by Amanda Swanson

The book is full of dwarfs, gnomes, fairies, talking animals, an evil queen , and Kristina.  Kristina is an awkward young girl who feels like the most unpopular girl in her school. With more than a fair share of teasing and misfit reality until she receives a cool gift... This gift  transports her to a magical land for the adventure of a lifetime where she finds everything HOME did NOT have, friends, magic and most importantly a place she fits in.

I was contacted by Victoria about taking the opportunity to receive and review her new book, The Magic Warble, and at first I was super excited.  This book promised to deliver everything I truly enjoy (Yeah I like fairies and fantasy lands, sue me.. bwahahahaha).  Then, reality started to sink in I haven't been able to read a book in 4 years.  The ONLY reason I got through the Twilight saga was because I did audio book and listened to them bit by bit as I prepared meals and fed the gremlins /sigh/.  BUT, I decided to read it TO them, figured after the usual Dr. Seuss or Good Night moon, they'd get a little Warble Action.  It went great, but I started noticing, that after they had KNOCKED out, I was NO where NEAR done with the reading, I wanted more, NO, I needed more.  This book had me HOOKED.

Pros:

Aside from the obvious... That it's AWESOME... lol.. . The story was very well paced, I never felt lost or hat it was too slow, the character development was excellent, and the illustrations? Well, just amazing.  This book is intended for a younger audience, I KNOW my nieces will love it (I'm passing my copy on to them but only as a loaner..), but as you can see those of us who enjoy a change of pace from the medical thrillers, apocalyptic novels, and self help book this is a refreshing change.

Cons:

I felt the story seemed familiar, and a bit predictable.  That being said.  This book IS intended for a younger audience so this did not bother me, or take away form the story at ALL.

To read more about The Magic Warble  or to read about the Author, head over to the web-site HERE

I can honestly say, this is now on my list of one of my favorites, and think I will read it over and over to my daughters when they are old enough to follow along.

Dr's Visit, The Good, The Bad, and The Hilarious

I had surgery a few weeks ago, and honestly not sure if I mentioned it or not, and I'm too lazy to go back to my previous posts and check... SORRY!!  But, today I had my follow up.. Let me warn ya now, if you are one of those that are VERY easily offended, and every little thing is TMI, you've been warned... This was a coochie doctor, so pass this post up if it MAY make ya say eeeewwwwww..

So, in my mind this was just a simple follow up, sit down, discuss the procedure that had been done, the findings, etc... No undressing to be done, so I headed there with the gremlins in tow.  Once we get in the exam room the nurse hands me a gown and advises me he will want to do a pelvic exam and to undress from he waist down.. OH MAN!!! My legs weren't shaved, I don;t even think I put LOTION on, and the gremlins... THE GREMLINS..
I'm going to traumatize them early... I KNOW the day will come when these little beauties will have their moment on those wonderful stirrups, in the most unbearable position imaginable, but I had NO intention of exposing them THIS way, or THIS early.  Here we go, I had no choice really, I don't have family here and no one to leave them with even if I had known.

    So, I start to undress...

    K1: Mom?
    Me: Yes Punky?
    K1: Where are your pants?
    Me: On the table.
K2: You're taking off your PANTIES?
    Me: Yes baby.
    K2: For the DOCTOR?
    Me:/sigh/ Yes Baby.
K1: He's going to look at your Privates?
Me: /sigh/ Yes baby, now I need you both to sit right over there (picked a nice place next to my head as to try and minimize the questions later) and be good little girls for mommy and the Dr.

Well, THAT seemed to work, and he was AMAZING, talked to them kept them entertained while he did what he had to do, and made an already unpleasant situation a little bearable.  Turns out not ALL the news was good news, and more tests will have to be done... Cancer is a tricky little bugger.. But there was optimism in his words, and that was comforting.

After all was said and done, we headed home, and NOT a word of this was ever mentioned by either of them.. This seems kind of weird and out of the ordinary for these two.. I can guarantee you that when I least expect it, and in the most embarrassing situation this WILL come back to haunt me.

I can see it now.... In the supermarket or something in an aisle full of men, one of them will undoubtedly bring up the day I took off my pants and panties and laid down for some man.  Like that time we were buying bandaids and wizzed by the femnine products and they grabbed a box of tampons and screamed look mommy bandaids for your booty...

    reSolution Sunday wk3

OK.. so, 3 weeks down in 2011... and It's time to come clean, fess up, and see how well we did with our little goals last week...

I've started out with just three...
    • Lose weight.... (my goal is to reach 150... Stop laughing.. lol/// HEY I started out at 299...)
      • 12/31 .... 189.6 lbs
      • 1/7......... 186.3lbs
      • 1/14....... 185.7lbs
      • 1/21........ 181.1lbs

    • What I did?  Well, hubby's been diagnosed with high blood pressure so we have cut out red meat, added a lot of veggies, and I have been trying to cook with less salt.  I'm assuming more adjustment WILL be made.. /sigh/ I LOVE food..  BUT, we've gone from eating fast food at least 8 times or more a week (two years ago) to maybe 1 every 2 weeks.. is pretty good, I think..
We have all been sick this whole week, so NO working out... I can totally see the difference that makes.. /sigh/  ... BUT  We DID recieve the Kinect as a gift and I'm sooooo looking forward to trying out ZUMBA.... Hopefully we'll get back n track next week..

    • Get out of debt... (YEAH RIGHT!!! But I can try to do better, as I've been trying for years, and will for years to come.. Cycle of life.. lol)..
      • I was able to totally pay off ONE more credit card and reduce the interest rate on another to 5%.... Slow and steady, but we'll get THERE.. lol
      • The Budget HAS been made... and we have been able to adhere to it..
      • I've been doing MORE mystery shopper jobs..
      • Smarter shopping and couponing..If you want you can check out more money saving / making ideas HERE...
      • I have been diligently planning my menus.. you can check out of Menu plan Mondays. posts and see our recipes there...  I REALLY should start revising them to the healthier versions we've been using..

    • Be the best mom I can be... (Shouldn't I be doing that ANYWAYS? and for the REST of my life?? )
    •  Enrolled the gremlins in a few classes @ the Y they aren't doing as well as I hope, and you can read more about that HERE...
Have started doing Bento lunches to get them to try new foods... They have been really receptive to this idea... and I find I can usually get them to consume the healthier less received foods this way..(really should post about that.. I know soooo many mommas struggling with picky eaters)

Do you make resolutions? Do you keep them?

If you want to participate, feel free to add the badge and link up so others can see how you have accomplished your goals.. We can ALL use some pointers from each other..

      Mi Casa, Mi Casa...

This is a RANT.. Plain and simple... VENTING!!!!

I'm a little heated, and quite frankly whining... If you want, just scroll down to a happy chipper post, if NOT? You've been warned....

      http://www.plu.edu/%7Eallenka/img/House_Front.jpg

We are a military family, and when we hit our second duty station (since being married, third if you count Italy where we were BOTH stationed and met) in 99' we decided to try and make the best of it, and settle down.  We always knew there was a chance we'd have to leave, but figured while we were there we'd try to make it home for as long as possible and bought a little house.  Well, after a GOOD run we had to leave last year, and though it pained me to leave my friends, my family, my life, it was inevitable, and I counted my blessings that it lasted as long as it did.

We were of course faced with the decision of WHAT to do with our home, the only home our gremlins had ever know, and with this economy the way it is we decided to try and rent it out.  I'm here to tell you... Being a landlord is NOT all fun and games...

We found another military family to rent the house, and were elated.  A great family. BUT it's been nothing but issues form the beginning.  I'm not placing blame, OK maybe a little, and I'm sure she has a whole other rant but this is MY story Damn IT!!.  But, where do I begin?

First week in, they complained about roaches, now honestly, in the 11 years we've lived there if I saw FOUR it was A LOT.  It's a waterfront property on a lake so Palmetto bugs are NOT ! out of the question, but the odd thing was they mentioned they had a roach infestation at the LAST house they lived in (hmmmmm).   We dealt back and forth with the exterminator, he exclaimed that maybe the house being empty for 4 days may have caused a few to come in, but NOT an infestation like they were describing.   They tried several different solutions and finally decided to fumigate the ENTIRE house including in the siding.  Once this was done the exterminator exclaimed that he was shocked that he did not see a single roach in the house.  Usually when this type of procedure is done, it's an overwhelming site to see them all come running out of the walls and all over the floors, but not a ONE...

We moved past that, quite frankly I just wanted to keep them happy (first time landlord after all).

NEXT was the complaints about the AC, the electric bill, the heat.. It was unusually HOT this year EVERYWHERE.. But OK, we had guys out to clean the ducts, to recharge the AC, to replace parts, etc.  Then the heater is not heating enough.. COME ON..  AGAIN it's ridiculously unusually COLD this winter again EVERYWHERE..  DH and I NEVER seemed to have ANY issues, it just throws me for a loop that all of a sudden in just 6 months it's all turned to crap?  Either that or he and I were just TOO complacent with everything.

Well, the final kick in the balls was a nice e-mail I received yesterday that they are not happy and it doesn't feel like "home". DUH!! It's NOT home, you're renting it.. If you want a "home" Buy one.. /sigh/ That they don't feel it's worth the rent, and we would either have to come down on the price or they are not reupping the lease.  I said more power to them.. Go ahead and go, quite frankly I think it's worth that and MORE!!! It's HOME to ME!!!

Today when I spoke with them, they mentioned that maybe I can find someone like them that didn't know any better to pay that kind of rent and that it was false advertising that i lied about the square footage, that they are uncomfortable because the house is too small.  NOW, COME ON!!! I can't MAKE the house BIGGER, if you need more room, find a bigger house.   Plus I think they just accused me of not only lying but taking advantage of them... I was speechless.

ANOTHER complain? They have to dust every 2 days.  Can someone tell me how that's MY fault?  Dust is dead skin... There are 5 of them and a dog... Either reduce the inhabitants of the house, change the filters, (cause they had us clean the ducts this summer so it's NOT that), dust and get OVER it, or use more LOTION.. Bwahahhahaha.

I did a search in the area, and the rent is actually comparable if not a little lower than houses that size in the neighborhood. I'm just perplexed.. lol.. Am I being unreasonable?

      Sincerely,

      Need to take NEW approach!!

Well, the gremlins had their second swim lesson today.  I guess there is good and bad news.. /sigh/  The last swim lesson Luna did great and was in the water paddling and kicking, but Star was NOT feeling it.  She kept crying for me (I was sitting on the bleachers on the opposite side of the pool), and even when I went over to them and sat right by her, she refused to go in.  I figured this time, I'd just leave the pool area entirely and just watch from the lobby (there is a window upstairs that looks onto the pool).  I was a little surprised, since they are both usually really excited about going into the water.  I did observe though that everything was fine up until her sister got comfortable with the instructor and her usual happy outgoing self.. As soon as that happened Luna just retracted into her shy shell.. The more Luna came out, the further Star sunk in.. /sigh/

I figured maybe it's the acoustics of an indoor pool (there's an aquatics aerobics class going on at the same time, and maybe the noise was too much), maybe the new environment, the new person, maybe it was just too much for her to rake in.  So, today,  I showed up a half hour early and sat with them on the bleachers and we watched the class before them, I talked to them about swimming, about going in the water, etc.  and they BOTH seemed really excited.  When their turn came, I said my good byes and headed upstairs.  Everything seemed to be going just fine until the third student showed up, and Luna looked up and saw me at the window.. Then the waterworks and screaming commenced.  It took everything I had inside of me NOT to go running down and grab my little gremlin and kiss and hug her, but I stood my ground.  I figured if I did that it'd just signal to her that every time she screamed I'd come running, and that is probably NOT a good thing..

So, I just hung out upstairs like a coward, peaking every so often at my screaming toddler.
I FINALLY went down 5 minutes before the class was over, and procured my two gremlins, a little sad that Star was NOT cooperating, but totally understanding..
The instructor then advised me that if she does not start participating she will recommend I try a mommy and me class.. All good, (been down THAT road before) except... Luna will be fine remaining in her class by herself, I can just entertain Star for that 1/2 hour, BUT who will watch and entertain Luna while I'm In the pool with her sister?  We've faced THIS dilemma before, and THAT is why we haven't had classes before now.  /sigh/
Well, it looks like I'm going to have to try something ELSE.  They have family swim every evening from 1830-1930 (which will wreak HAVOC on our dinner and sleep schedule but I DO realize it's NOT every night and NOT permanent, so we MAY just have to suck it up) so, we may have to take advantage of this and maybe help get Star used to the indoor pool and her surroundings a little with me and daddy, people she's accustomed to.  Another thing I'm going to try is different classes for both of them, maybe being separated might help.  The classes were canceled due to inclement weather last week and we need to reschedule a MAKEUP class, and I just may schedule them at different times/days, and see if this makes a difference...

      Wish us luck...

Have any of YOU faced this dilemma? Any advice? Ideas?

          reSolution Sunday wk2

OK.. so, 2 weeks down in 2011... and It's time to come clean, fess up, and see how well I did with my little goals last week...

I've started out with just three...
          • Lose weight.... (my goal is to reach 150... Stop laughing.. lol/// HEY I started out at 299...)
            • 12/31 .... 189.6 lbs
            • 1/7......... 186.3lbs
            • 1/14....... 185.7lbs

/sigh/  ...

            • Smarter shopping and couponing..
          • Be the best mom I can be... (Shouldn't I be doing that ANYWAYS? and for the REST of my life?? )
          •  Enrolled the gremlins in a few classes @ the Y
Have started doing Bento lunches to get them to try new foods... They have been really receptive to this idea... and I find I can usually get them to consume the healthier less received foods this way..

Do you make resolutions? Do you keep them?

If you want to participate, feel free to add the badge and link up so others can see how you have accomplished your goals.. We can ALL use some pointers from each other..
