A ritualistic Man

My husband may not be superstitious, but he sure is ritualistic..

Every deployment he has been on since I've met him, he's shaved his head.

OK, I've shaved his head. This one was no different. I've tried time and time again to figure this one out. I guess it's like those silly rituals the sports players have, or some students that believe they have that LUCKY shirt. Me? I say bah Humbug... but you won't catch me walking under a ladder or opening an umbrella in the house. HA. I guess to each his own, so I have to respect his wishes, and I guess I'm not the one who has to look at that dome for all those months.

The girls on the other hand weren't so easily convinced.

Do you or anyone you know have a ritual, quirk, whatever? How do you deal?

Finally got back on Saturday from our camping trip. Can I tell you that 16 hours with a 7 year old, a 9 year old, and 9 month old twins is not fun. The trip was so long. We were exhausted when we arrived. After we set up camp, and took our showers it seems we found a little bit of stored energy.
OK the kids found some extra stored energy. I really needed a nap. I was very excited with our site this year was wonderful, very spacious and near the water, extremely beautiful.
It was wonderful after a long day to have dinner straight from the fire during the sun setting on the lake, very breath taking. I have to admit, it was a little challenging with the twins being so young, and not to mention sick. My girls caught their first cold last week, I was devastated. OK not really devastated, but pretty annoyed since I'm never a happy camper when I don't get any sleep (no pun intended). All in all, I would have to say regardless of the numerous obstacles we incurred during this outing, I have no regrets.
This entire trip wasn't about me anyways, it was for my husband and the kids. The kids had a blast, the activities were amazing, and we won family double dare (which made my husband and I heroes in the eyes of my niece and nephew).
Plus, my husband got to spend a little extra time with his family before the long deployment.

It was 0806

I met my husband as an active duty military member, and we used to deploy together. Boy, those were the days. But lately I've been keeping the fires burning on the home front. Here I am thirteen years later, and they haven't gotten any easier. I admit that I have never WATCHED his ships deploy. I have my own system for dealing with the separation, and standing on a pier and watching the ship sail away is not part of it. More power to those with the strength to do this. We were both very content with saying our see you later's on a pier and never looking back. Well, this time he expressed his wish for me and the girls to stay and watch him deploy, and of course I agreed.

So, I had to watch my husband deploy.

Although I've done this many times before, this was definitely the hardest. I was pretty much in denial for the first few hours, as I watched him take his bags out of the trunk. I was desensitized when I watched him load them on the boat.

I was numb as he kissed me good bye.
What is going on?
What is happening?
I don’t think I like this. I’m not used to this. I looked around, everyone is hugging, kissing, crying. Oh god, it’s getting hard to breathe. I watch a mother hugging her son, and holding on to him for dear life. Wives saying good bye as children are just beginning to realize exactly what mommy and daddy meant when they said daddy will be gone for a while. Then there was the hysterically sobbing wife, which had to have three sailors rip her off her husband. All this time, it felt like slow motion, like an out if body experience. Then I see him, he’s waving from the boat.
Wait, did I tell him I loved him?
Did I tell him I’ll miss him?
Oh no. I did not plan for this. I realized why I don’t do this.
You become emotionally attached in some way to everyone on that pier. I used to be the wife that never stuck around, and said it must be hard to have a family with a missing parent. The wife that used to swear she could imagine what it was like. But as I stood on that pier I became the wife that KNEW.
Here it comes; I watched them unmoor the boat. I watched it slowly slip backwards. Three blasts of the horn, I knew those well, I used to drive boats for this Navy these same boats that are now taking away my husband, my friend, the father of my girls.

I didn’t have the strength to watch it go past the horizon, the pain was too unbearable. It was 0806 the exact time I literally felt my heart rip from my chest and float away on a haze grey boat.

Nope, not a shout out to poltergeist... But we're finally back from camping, but not ready to post it all. Just wanted to excuse myself from being MIA. I'll be back with some pictures and the full scoop, hopefully within this week. I would say tomorrow, but my husband is getting ready for a long deployment, and I may not be emotionally available in the next few days. TTFN.

I ♥ it, You should try it 2.

Growing up in the Dominican Republic I was privileged to many new things. One of my favorites was the Chimichurri, a Dominican burger, this is found EVERYWHERE throughout the island and mainly sold in burger stands by street vendors. These are Delicious, and once you try one you'll fall in love.
Throughout my pregnancy, I was unfortunate to crave many simple things from the islands, and this was one of them so I was faced with only one choice... Learn to make one..

I did, and it was delicious, of course NOTHING can compare to the originals made by the pros(not to mention, the island breeze and the cold Presidente beer to accompany it), but here it is with a little twist.

  • Portuguese rolls
  • 1lb Ground beef
  • 1lb Hot Italian Sausage Meat
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 cups shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium carrot grated
  • 2 tsp of oil
  • salt
  • pepper
  • oregano
  • 3 tbsp mayo
  • 1 tspmustard
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp vinegar
  • sugar

  1. I use a mortar and Pestle and crush the garlic and 1/2 onion with a little salt and pepper to make a paste.
  2. Mix the meats, the paste (save a little for the sauce), a little more salt and pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and a pinch of oregano. Mix them well, and make 4 or 5 patties, depending on the desired thickness of patties.
  3. Cure your grill with the oil, and place your patties.
  4. While your patties grill, make the Chimi sauce. Blend some mayo, the rest of that paste, ketchup, soy sauce, a pinch or oregano, a dash of vinegar, pinch or sugar and a little bit of mustard.
  5. Slice the other 1/2 of the onion and mix it with the shredded cabbage, the grated carrot and your sauce.
  6. Warm up your rolls, and assemble. Place burgers on rolls, and garnish with the delicious Dominican style Cole slaw and enjoy.

Mommy's Rock

I was watching Rachel Ray the other day and she had Leah Remini as a guest and I have to say, I laughed like crazy. I always loved the King of Queens (and if you read my last post... Saved by the bell, and yes she was a love interest for Zack.. hater her then, love her now) and let me tell you, I'd have to say she never acted a day on that show. Her personality IS Carrie from King of Queens. Turns out they were Rachel Ray's show to share their story. Their daughter now almost 4 still drinks from a bottle, and despite advise from professionals and a loyal viewer Leah and her husband still always give in. Hey to each his own, I can relate on wearing the big mommy wuss hat a time of too. I cant stand to hear my girls cry..
Well, Leah is working with several other funny women on a website called In The Motherhood. It's stories written by moms about moms, and these skits are hilarious. You have to check it out. I know we have all been in one if not more of these situations (maybe some are a little exaggerated.. But hilarious). I'd love to hear some of your stories. If you've got a funny one, share, and in the meantime.. check out In The Motherhood.

Got out on Friday to see the new Keifer Sutherland movie "Mirrors". I am a horror junkie, so I really enjoyed it. I went to see it with my sister, and my wonderful hubby stayed at home with the girls.

I thought the story was great, and the gore was fantastic, and Keifer was awesome. I must say, besides Amy smart and Keifer Sutherland, the rest of the acting was a bit undesirable, but easily ignored. I still thoroughly enjoyed this flick, and would recommend it to anyone that is either a Keifer Sutherland fan, or looking for a good horror flick. OH YEAH... One heck of a twist at the end... I'm known for predicting movie endings (even figured out the sixth sense in the first half), and I didn't see this one coming...

It's too soon.

I met a nice young girl at the supermarket the other day that was expecting twins and I remember telling her that I never really got big. When I told my husband he laughed, so I got upset and pulled out the pictures to prove it. MAN i was HUGE!!! I didn't remember. The last picture was 2 days before I gave birth, I was exactly 34 weeks. Although the pregnancy had it's ups and downs (felt like more downs) I would so do it again. And YES even twins again. I was ecstatic and relieved once it was over and very lucky that at 34 weeks, my girls were 7lbs 15oz and 7lbs 13oz and both 21 inches. But now they're really growing. I've got two mobile machines, and I can't help but to wonder, where all the time has gone by. I look at the pictures of them when they were first born and I miss that. I don't really miss the sleepless nights, but I miss the feel of soft warm sleeping babies, so cuddly. They're still cuddly, but man can they squirm. It's only been 9 months, but so much has changed. Am I crazy for thinking about another one?

Support our Troops

When I was enlisted, I used to look forward to those boxes containing letters, pictures, cookies, and anything that reminded me of home. Now I'm a wife of an enlisted man, and find myself with the duty of sending him a piece of home while he's deployed, but not all of our troop members have someone back home to correspond with or receive packages from. There are a lot of lonely holidays out there. It's true the bond between comrades in arms is like no other, I can speak from experience, my bond was so great I married it, but sometimes you'd give anything for a taste of life as you knew it. I had a friend, that cried just at the sight of a honey bun, a honey bun. This man was 6'7" 300+lbs man, but he cried every time his mama sent him a package because she remembered how much he loved those darn sugary treats. Not to mention, this also boosts morale, and we all know we have a more effective military if there's good morale.
Well, my husband is still enlisted and he has always been very supportive of his team, and very conscious of their well being and morale. After the first few deployments he did after we returned from overseas, he vowed to not leave a single teammate unappreciated. Since then he has always sent me a list of those team members with little or no family and their addresses, both electronic and physical. I share these addresses with some friends who are teachers and the teachers of our niece and nephew and these wonderful people and the children of their classrooms send cards, letters pictures and packages to these young men and women. Last year the town hall got together and donated a ton of stuff that I shipped over to them, this was amazing. These things really show them we are behind them 100%.
We may not all support the war, but we should all support our troops. They don't pick and choose who they die or risk their lives for, they do it everyone, and nothing brings down the morale than to feel like you're doing it for nothing.

If you want to help here are a few sites each offering you a way to show your support.
Operation Gratitude -- They send care packages out to Troop members
Support Our troops -- Great site for info if you're looking for a specific way to support
America Supports You -- Offers great direction
Any Soldier -- Actually allows you to personally connect with a Member and see their messages.
Support Your Troops -- This site posts videos of troop members and of family and friends.

Show your support, because the troops and their family unselfishly support you.

**** If you want to send an e-mail or package to one of hubbies Team mates directly, just e-mail me privately and I'll give you the info ****

I ♥ Zack Morris

I'm anxiously awaiting the new TNT courtroom drama, Raising the bar . I'm a sucker for all those shows, and slightly obsessive if you ask my husband (but who's asking him anyways).
I'm excited to think of a new show and knew characters, and of course there's Mark-Paul Gosselaar. Any of you 80's fans out there would know him better as Zack Moriss. I Love the 80's and I don't think I missed a single episode of Saved by the Bell. I had such a crush on Zack, and am so excited to see him coming back to TV. On Raising the bar, he plays Jerry Kellerman, a public defender, a passionate and ruthless public defender. Oh yeah, did I mention I ♥ Zack Morris? He's back Labor Day on TNT.

Why so Serious???

Holy IMAX Batman!!!

I finally caved and got a sitter. My mother and husband had an intervention and forced me out of the house. Honestly I did need a break, and some adult interaction. Well, mom stayed with the girls and hubby and I headed out to dinner and a movie. We opted for The Dark Knight, the new Batman movie. I really wanted to see this movie, and it has been getting a lot of hype lately. Let me tell you all the hype was well merited. I was told certain scenes were filmed with an IMAX camera (70mm instead of the usual 35mm film) and can only be seen in an IMAX theatre. We were really excited to do IMAX, and let me tell you, I would definitely do it again, it was incredible. Those scenes definitely made you feel like you were IN the movie. As far as the movie is concerned, I have very mixed feelings. I am a HUGE joker fan, and was very skeptical when I heard Heath Ledger was playing the part. I just couldn't imagine him as the Joker, and these things have influenced me on seeing many movies before. Well, I can't imagine anyone else could have done as good a job. I'd say the Joker stole the show. This movie was jam packed with well renowned actors, an entertaining plot, and some interesting twists which brought a familiar villain and a new one. I must admit, I laughed, I cried, and I left very satisfied. Can't wait for the next one. hehehehe.
